Sheffield Community Health Outreach Day
Negril, Westmoreland - May 12, 2017: The NHF Team led by Ms. Marsha Sellers completed a very successful Community Health Day at the Sheffield SDA Church on May 11, 2017. The health day patrons were supported by a very competent, caring team of professionals.
The Sheffield residents and residents from adjoining communities, turned out in large numbers to receive health checks for Cardiovascular and Diabetes support. Many individuals were able to receive applications for the NHF and JADEP Health Cards.

Sheffield in Westmoreland, Jamaica will have Showers of Medical Blessings on May 11, 2017, when the National Health Fund (NHF) comes to the community to offer Medical Screenings and Health Education Talks.
Stroke is a big medical blot on Sheffield and adjoining Communities. Come on out from Springfield, Ketto, Silver Spring, Mt. Airy, Good Hope, Negril, and all other communities adjoining Sheffield and these communities.

LEARN ABOUT STROKE
Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in Jamaica. It is the number one killer of Jamaican women, and the number two killer of Jamaican men. Even Jamaican children are having strokes because stroke is not a respecter of anyone regardless of age, economic status, education, or gender. A stroke happens when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. Brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die and when a blood vessel in the brain there is a brain hemorrhage. A stroke can cause a person to permanently loose speech, movement and memory. Learn more about what a stroke is and how to educate the public on ways to prevent one from happening to them. Jamaicans need to learn about strokes so less people will get one, and if they do get one, they will know what to do in a timely manner, so less people die, or become disabled from strokes. Although stroke is the third leading cause of death in Jamaica and the leading cause of adult disability, many myths surround this disease. Test how much you know about stroke today. MYTH or FACT MYTH: Stroke cannot be prevented. FACT: Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable. MYTH: There is no treatment for stroke. FACT: At any sign of stroke call 1-1-9 immediately. Treatment may be available. MYTH: Stroke only affects the elderly. FACT: Stroke can happen to anyone at any time. MYTH: Stroke happens in the heart. FACT: Stroke is a "brain attack". MYTH: Stroke recovery only happens for the first few months after a stroke. FACT: Stroke recovery is a lifelong process. MYTH: Strokes are rare. FACT: There are nearly 100,000 thousand stroke survivors in Jamaica. Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in Jamaica. MYTH: Strokes are not hereditary. FACT: Family history of stroke increases your chance for stroke. MYTH: If stroke symptoms go away, you don’t have to see a doctor. FACT: Temporary stroke symptoms are called transient ischemic attacks (TIA). They are warning signs prior to actual stroke and need to be taken seriously.
