Strategic Partnerships For Community Care
Each year, about 1800-2000 people in Jamaica die from a Stroke. It is difficult to say the number who suffered a stroke as there is no registry and no formal record keeping, coupled with the fact that some people who suffered strokes in Westmoreland never make it to the hospital or show up for any kind of medical treatment. Some people have neither money nor a support system, so they fall through the big crack in the Jamaican health system.
Based on not so current data from the WHO, Stroke is the leading cause of death in Jamaica, the number one cause of death for women and the number two cause of death for men. It is the leading cause of disability for Westmoreland and the entire country. Middle aged women in Westmoreland are dying from stroke at twice the rate of deaths from cancer.
Milka Clarke Stroke Brain Trauma Foundations’s local efforts will result in enlarging its circle of influence in the parish of Westmoreland and the country Jamaica, as we take the lead in providing Stroke prevention/education and post-stroke services for the high-risk, underserved, marginalized, and forgotten populations.

The Foundation has identified one Type B, Public General Hospital that provides primary and secondary care services in the capital Savanna-La-Mar and twenty one (21) Health Centres in five (5) Health Districts across the parish where we can set up program sites to serve the surrounding communities, as a strategic design that will facilitate these programs in serving all Health Districts in Westmoreland. This can then be duplicated in other parishes.

Milka Clarke Stroke Brain Trauma Foundation will develop and nurture partnerships with the one Public General Hospital and the Health Centers in each Health District Parishwide, to offer programs and resources in those communities.
