2015 Milka Clarke Memorial Scholarship Recipients
September 12, 2015:
The Milka Clarke Memorial Scholarship was awarded for the first time on Thursday, September 10, 2015 to four students at Green Island High School (GIHS). The memorial scholarship was named to honor 'Mis Milka' who died on July 25, 2015 from the effects of a hemorrhagic stroke. Miss Milka was big on education and was a staunch advocate for academic excellence.
Four of 'Miss Milka's' six children are graduates of Green Island High School, beginning with oldest daughter Debbie, Garfield, Verna and Lauretta. Several grandchildren also walked the hallowed corridors at GIHS.
The foundation recognizes that the academic journey to self-actualization, is not easy. Miss Milka was a philantropher and would give her last cent to help others. She had a community spirit of giving and helping, traits she instilled in her children.
The Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Debbie Thomas-Brown, is a former teacher who understands the difference a helping hand makes in the life of a disadvantaged child. The foundation, through the memorial scholarship, allows students who have been striving in their academic pursuit, scoring at least a ‘B’ average in their grades, possess some basic leadership qualities, provide service to their community, and have the desire to pursue higher education, to be considered eligible to receive a scholarship award.
Scholarships are awarded to outstanding youths who are students of excellence with verifiable financial hardships. They may be high school seniors planning to pursue post-secondary education at technical schools, as well as at two year colleges and four year universities. Lower class students can also qualify for the scholarship which has it's criteria set out for those intereted in applying to see. Qualified applicants are eligible to receive a one-time award.
